Stump grinding, done right

The grinder chews the stump into wood chips below ground level, so you can mow, seed, plant or pave right over the spot.

What I grind

Single stumps

Any size, from a small ornamental to a big oak or maple. One stump is never too small a job to call about.

Multiple stumps

Had a tree company take a few trees down? Clearing a lot or a fence line? Multiple stumps on one visit is what this machine is built for.

Surface roots

Some trees leave roots snaking across the lawn that catch the mower. I can grind out the visible roots running from the stump. Roots are quoted separately, so mention them when you send photos.

Backyards and tight access

I run a Vermeer SC362. It fits through a 36-inch gate, so fenced backyards, side yards and spots between houses aren't a problem. If your gate is narrower, send a photo and we'll figure it out.

What's included

  • Dig Safe (811) before I grind. Buried gas, electric and water lines get marked before the grinder touches the ground. Dig Safe takes about 3 business days to come out, so I call as soon as you book.
  • Grinding below grade. Usually 4–6 inches below ground, enough to mow, seed or lay sod. Deeper on request for a new tree or a patio.
  • A chip curtain. It keeps flying chips away from your house, cars and windows.
  • Cleanup. Chips raked and leveled into the hole as best I can, and the driveway and walks blown clean.
  • A firm price up front. You get the price in writing before I start. No surprises.

What's not included

I don't haul away wood chips. The chips stay on your property, raked and leveled into the hole. They settle and break down over time, and plenty of people use the extras as mulch.

Before I get there

I call Dig Safe before I grind, but Dig Safe only marks the utility companies' lines. It doesn't mark private lines on your property. If you have any of these near the stump, please flag them or tell me when you send photos:

  • Sprinkler lines and heads
  • Invisible dog fence wire
  • Landscape lighting or other low-voltage wires
  • Lines to a septic system, propane tank, shed, pool or garage

And a couple of easy ones:

  • Unlock any gates so I can reach the stumps
  • Move cars, toys and lawn furniture away from the stump
  • Keep pets inside while I'm working

How it works

  1. Send photos

Take two photos of each stump: one up close with a tape measure across the top, and one from about 20 feet back so I can see the access. Use the form, or just text me.

  2. Get your price

You'll get a firm price by text or email, usually the same day.

  3. I grind it

I call Dig Safe, grind the stump below ground level, rake and level the chips into the hole and clean up. Dig Safe takes about 3 business days to mark the lines, so most jobs are scheduled within a week.

What I don't do

I grind stumps only. I don't take down trees. If you need a tree removed, I'm happy to point you to a good local tree service, and I can grind the stump after they're done.

Ready to get rid of that stump?

Send me a photo and I'll get you a free, firm price, usually the same day.
